Visa and Asis Elektronik, Turkey’s leading smart city technologies brand, have collaborated to expand the acceptance of contactless cards in public transportation, which is an important part of daily life in cities, in Turkey. Within the scope of the cooperation, which has already been implemented in 11 provinces, credit cards, debit cards and prepaid cards can easily pay the public transportation toll without contact, and the project aims to expand this convenience to 40 provinces in the coming periods. Consumers in the cities where the card acceptance infrastructure is provided by İşbank will be able to board public transportation vehicles with contactless cards in their wallets, instead of using only tickets or public transportation boarding cards issued in their own city. Contactless cards printed abroad will also be valid. In this way, the position of these cities among tourist-friendly, accessible and inclusive smart cities will be strengthened.
Nearly half of the cities in Turkey will offer contactless payment in public transportation
With the cooperation of Visa and Asis Elektronik and İşbank’s card acceptance infrastructure, contactless credit card, debit card and prepaid card transitions in public transportation vehicles in 11 provinces including Balıkesir, Elazığ, Eskişehir, Hatay, Kütahya, Malatya, Mersin, Sakarya, Samsun, Van and Yalova have already been launched. The application is planned to be gradually introduced in other provinces. Thanks to the system that enables the use of foreign payment cards with contactless features in transportation, the touristic value of the cities covered by the project will also increase. Local or foreign tourists visiting these cities will be able to easily pass through the turnstiles with their contactless cards without having to think about where to buy a ticket or wait in the ticket or transportation card filling line.
No more carrying cash and loading money on cards for urban transportation
Jak Telyaz, Head of Business Development, Visa Southern Europe, stated that Visa continues to work with the vision of making cities smarter and more livable. “With the smart transportation solution developed within the framework of our global standards, passengers will be able to pass directly through the turnstiles with their domestic and international contactless credit and debit cards, prepaid cards or mobile devices that they use every day. Since this application eliminates the need to carry money or load money on the transportation card, it offers a much more convenient and comfortable urban public transportation experience for both local users and tourists. In 2022, after the contactless public transportation project we launched in cooperation with Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, we are very pleased to offer this innovation, which we will implement in nearly half of the provinces in Turkey with Asis cooperation and İşbank’s card acceptance infrastructure, in 11 provinces already.”
